Along the Ice shelf
The Nautilus sails along the edge of the Antarctic ice shelf just beneath the surface. Aronnax describes these waters as particularly clear. |

Technically, this was a fairly easy rendering. The background is an actual photograph taken underwater in the Antarctic by Norbert Wu. This and other photos in a February 1999
National Geographic article confirm Verne's description of the clarity of this sea.
The propeller wake, actually a fire volumetric object, was the most difficult item. A single overhead light provides the scene lighting with ambient light nearly zero. The
Nautilus lantern and other running lights are not illuminated. An interior light is turned up to light the salon interior. This is somewhat untrue to the novel since the narrative states the salon lights go off before the panels open. The only post-processing was image cropping. |
