Artifacts
Everywhere we walked we found stone tools. The basalt tool at left is for chopping. The obsidian implement at right with its sharp point, could be used to punch or drill a hole. These tools fit the hand easily and naturally. Holding them, I imagined the Rapa Nui who used and discarded them centuries earlier. |
Chris holds a basalt plow
blade at left. The smooth round stone at right could be used for
pounding or grinding. Like the smaller tools above, my fingers fit
the depressions with ease. Although it looks massive, the volcanic
stone is not heavy.
We were surveying and not collecting, so even when we picked up these tools to inspect them, we replaced them immediately. Not exactly the outdoor museum concept, but nearly so. |
